Have you made plans for your child’s future? As parents we believe we will take care of our children forever.

Guess what? We all age differently, but reality is our children will outlive us. Have you thought about:

  • What will be used to take care of your child’s future medical and housing needs?
  • Is your child on your corporate insurance plan?
  • Will that insurance continue if you stop working?

You may think that a special needs trust or an ABLE account is how you solve this problem. Yet regardless of whether you have set up a trust or ABLE account, your child may have health needs that require Medicaid supports. The easiest way to qualify for Medicaid is by having Supplemental Security Income, or SSI.

There is a 5 part process that Social Security uses to determine if your adult child is eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) after age 18. It is different from childhood eligibility and is very confusing for families to understand.

SSI Success Framework Course

This online course will walk your through every step of the SSI application process from what you need to do before you apply to how your adult child can keep their Medicaid if they start working. This “learn at your own pace” class will guide you on how to describe your son or daughter in a way to helps Social Security determine adult disability. This class is specifically designed for families that have young adults with disabilities age 18-25. This course does NOT cover SSDI, or OASDI.

Throughout these eight part lessons, we will embark on a journey to

  • Build your knowledge of the SSI process and your adult child’s rights
  • Create a good description of your child based on SSA’s Adult Disability descriptions

What People Are Saying

Our son with Down Syndrome was initially denied SSI in 2019. At the suggestion of our financial planner, we reached out to Mary Jane for assistance. She guided us through the SSI process. With her help, we reapplied at the beginning of August 2020 and by the end of September, my son was approved. Cannot say enough good about their Framework for Success”! John, a parent

I thought I knew what I was doing when I applied for SSI for my daughter; and I thought the SSA office would help me. WRONG! After going through the SSI Success framework, I was more confident in my ability to answer the questions with the right information to ensure my daughter got SSI, but more importantly Medicaid“. Ann, a parent.

ABOUT THE EXPERT – Mary Jane Williams

Mary jane Williams has two adult children with disability labels, but she only applied for SSI for her son. Mary Jane truly believed that her son would work after high school. Yet, in his “super” senior year, it was evident that he would not have a full time job. She knew he would need supports after high school and realized quickly that Medicaid would be an imperative need throughout his life. She went to the SSA website and read the rules and regulations and submitted an SSI application for her son that was accepted. Yet, he did not receive the full amount. In addition, she attempted to use the Student Earned Income Exclusion for her son and soon learned how SSA had not applied this work incentive. Back to the drawing board she went.

She was lucky enough to attend an SSI workshop by a former Disability Determination Services employee. Yet, she knew she needed to learn more. She enrolled in Cornell University’s Social Security Work Incentive credentialing course and received her certificate in Dec. 2018. Since then she has helped over 40 families successfully through the SSI application process and decided to take that knowledge she learned to help others who may not have the time or education to navigate through the SSA insanity. The first SSI Success Framework course was born!

Mary Jane knows firsthand how scary the future can look like when parents take this journey alone.  She is breaking down barriers for kids with disabilities by helping families see possibilities through their tears & loneliness.  She has enjoyed sharing her experiences & knowledge by speaking to thousands of families & educators across the state of Texas.
